Vespa the travelling cat

Travelling with your pet can be quite challenging especially when going overseas.  In order to bring Shelby, my tiny chihuahua, to Europe, she had to be microchipped and then re-vaccinated for rabies. It was imperative that she be microchipped before being vaccinated.  A special form had to be filled out by the veterinarian, and then stamped by an agent from the CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency). That was the easy part.  Pets are not allowed in the cabin on flights to and from the UK; they must travel by cargo and they are not necessarily on the same flight as you.  Plus you have to deal with a third party which deals specifically with transporting pets via air cargo; this can be VERY expensive.  Can you imagine Shelby quivering like a leaf in a dark and cold cargo hold for over six hours? I certainly could not imagine putting her through that. So we flew to Paris, France instead and she spent the six hour flight at my feet under the seat in her carrier bag.  I sneaked her out for about an hour and let her sleep on my lap under a blanket, until she barked at the flight attendant. I’ve never been scolded by a flight attendant before!

Once in France, Shelby needed to be treated for tapeworms by a veterinarian within five days of entering the UK (a small pill given orally).  The rules just recently changed in january; prior to January 1st, pets had to be treated within 48 hours but not less than 24 hours before entering the UK.  The veterinarian in Paris was very friendly, and it was quite easy to get Shelby her official pet passport. I guess you could say she has dual citizenship now!

There are only a few approved routes into the UK via France. The easiest and most cost efficient way is to take a train from Paris to Calais, and then board a ferry to Dover, England.  At the ferry port in Calais, port authorities had to scan Shelby and verify her passport. Aboard the ferry, Shelby within a rigid carrier box was placed in a designated area below deck. The only other pet on board that morning was a pretty cat named Vespa (named after a bond girl). She had travelled all the way from Africa, and was on her way back home to Aberdeen, Scotland. I wondered if Vespa had to get a blood test three months after her rabies shot since she was coming from an “unlisted” country (according to DEFRA).  In any case, I was surprised to see how calm she was; a true jet-setting kitty. I hope she and her caretaker reached their final destination easily and safely.

The rest of the journey involved another train ride, a tube ride (from London Heathrow to Paddington station), and one last train ride to Bristol, England, our final destination.  If I could give one piece of advice to anyone wishing to travel with their pet, it would be to travel very lightly.  We were fortunate enough to have help from a nice Scottish gentleman (Vespa’s caretaker actually!) who helped carry our luggage. But don’t count on the kindness of strangers, travel lightly, otherwise you may just miss your train ride!

Lupo

I decided to change things up a bit for this post, so I let Christina (Lupo’s guardian) do the talking.  Who better to describe Lupo’s personality than his best pal!  Christina owns and operates Brandy’s Holistic Centre & Canine Cafe which I think is a great place to find quality pet food, and best of all kick back and enjoy a coffee while your pooch runs around.

Tell me a bit about Lupo; How old is he, where did he come from, what kind of dog is he?

  • Lupo is 3 years old, born September 15, 2008 we got him from a neighbour at our country place in Mont Laurier. The neighbour’s two dogs had their second litter together and unfortunately the mother rejected her puppies. We got Lupo at 4 weeks old because of this. Lupo’s father was a Labrador mixed with St-Bernard and his mother was a Cocker Spaniel mixed with a Collie. Therefore Lupo is a big mutt!!

What are some of his favourite pastimes?

  • He loves to play fetch! He could play for hours and hours on end! He loves swimming in our pool and in the lake and he also loves to scare away the squirrels in our backyard.

Does he have any bad habits?

  • He’s a really good dog, but he does have a few bad habits; barking is his biggest problem, a close second is drooling while he watches us eat (that’s the St-Bernard in him).

What is his most endearing quality?

  • I think its his puppy dog eyes! and he loves to cuddle!

What are his favourite treats? toys?

  • His favourite treats have to be buddy biscuits peanut butter flavor, pure bites liver flavour and just pretty much anything you could put peanut butter on. His favourite toys are anything that he could fetch really! Right now his favourite toy is Chuckit! Amphibious Ring (it’s a water frisbee).

Lupo is a mascot! Tell us a bit about Brandy’s?

  • Brandy’s is a Natural and Holistic pet food store. We specialize in cat and dog food that is natural and/or organic! None of our foods have any by-products, corn, soy, wheat or anything else that may be harmful to our beloved pets! We also carry natural treats, supplements and grooming products as well as accessories! Brandy’s is located in the Plateau and it isn’t always easy to find parking in our area, therefore we also deliver and do online orders; we cover Montreal, Laval, Terrebonne and Brossard! Brandy’s is also a canine cafe where clients can come with their four legged friends and have a specialty coffee or tea while their dogs play with some toys and Lupo! Visit us at brandys.ca.

The 6th Annual NDG Pet Fest 2011

I found out about this Pet Fest at the very last minute; but that didn’t stop me from scoping it out.  Any opportunity to be in the presence of pet lovers and their companions is utterly fantastic, especially in the city of Montreal.  This annual outdoor event brings together pet businesses, animal rescue groups, and of course pets of all sorts, including cats and rabbits. Naturally, I had to bring Shelby along for the fun.  A bit overwhelming for her at first, but she quickly got accustomed to the brouhaha and the constant butt-sniffing from other dogs.  There were contests, games, and even a parade for the furry fashionistas.  It was a beautiful sunny afternoon spent with some interesting characters from the four-legged as well as the two-legged variety.  We sure do love our pets!

Princess, a rescued Greyhound, was prim and proper. These amazing animals have incredibly muscular hind legs.

This is 10-year old Opi in her bear hat.

Dream, another Greyhound rescue, giving me a big smile. She's got lots to smile about.

Poppy saying hello to Shelby. He was a real ladies-man!

Molly the Australian sheep dog.

Poppy the Schnoodle.

Poppy had the most adorable outfit.

Two Great Pyrenees and one Great Pyrenees-Lab mix (he's the one in the middle).

Poppy making his mark in style.

Little Shelby in a stroller.

This old gal was trying to get some rest.

I was told this Great Dane wins for "biggest dog" every year. At 180 lbs is it any wonder?

Oscar just can't believe what he's seeing!

Opi won for best costume. What a gorgeous gal!

Siamese, if you please.

Siamese cats often get a bad rap.  Not sure where the reptutation for being agressive comes from, but I can assure you this cat is nothing like those sly Siamese cats in the Disney movie ”Lady and the Tramp”; “We are Siamese if you please…we are Siamese if you don’t please.” Bailey and I used to be best buddies; he was my sugar pie, my sunshine, my cuddle muffin.  When I moved out of my parents house, our relationship inevitably changed.  He no longer bounces to the door and meows to greet me, or rubs his head on mine.  In fact, since I adopted Shelby my little Chihuahua, he runs away at the sound of my voice.  He associates it with Shelby the 3 lb terror who really just wants to say “hello”.  It makes me sad to think about it; Bailey Boo doesn’t love me anymore :( But that’s okay; I’ve come to realize that all things eventually come to an end.  I just wish I could have savoured those Bailey moments just a little longer.

These shots were taken last week; we tricked Bailey into thinking the dog was not around (she was hidden inside the house!). The session lasted all of 20 minutes until the jig was up; Bailey had figured it out and ran into his hiding spot in the basement. I did manage, however, to capture some nice poses of him outside.  My mom wants some nice pictures of Bailey before he gets too old and cranky.  I’m planning on taking some more pictures over the next few months so that I can put together a photo album of the “little monkey”.

A Weekend at Wannamaker Lake, Ontario

Shelby and I spent this past weekend at Wannamaker Lake in the company of Annie and her boxer Roxy.  We were excited to spend a girl’s only weekend filled with conversation, doggie paddling, canoeing, fishing and plain old relaxing!  Unfortunately, this camping “haven”, as described on the website, did not meet some of our expectations.  The proprietor had to mow some weeds down to create a site to pitch our tent!  We did not have our own fire pit, nor did we have a picnic table.  There was a communal bathroom that was lacking toilet paper (note to self: always pack some TP when going camping!).  Annie and I did not despair; with a little improvisation and quick thinking we ended up with a very nice set-up nestled in the cool shade of some trees and with a nice view of the lake.  The gorgeous lake, fantastic weather and great company more than made up for the lack luster camping amenities.

p.s. Swimming in the lake with the dogs was quite hilarious.  Despite Roxy’s regal appearance; she is a complete wimp when it comes to taking a dip in the wet stuff.  Shelby was so petrified she spent most of the time perched up on my shoulder or on my head while I swam.  It is the funniest thing to see this little creature paddling 1000 strokes a minute.  Sorry no pictures! We didn’t want to run the risk of tipping the canoe and potentially damaging the cameras ;)

Two Socks Postcards!!!

I think I can speak for everyone when I say “thank goodness summer is finally here!”; well almost here anyway :)  It’s so nice to see everyone step out of their winter refuge, a.k.a. the house, to breathe in the fresh air, soak in some long-awaited sunshine, and run with their pooches in the grassy dog parks.  Actually, this is the best time to start revving up my marketing campaign, and get the word out about Two Socks!  I have been distributing my new MOO postcards all around town hoping to peak the interest of pet lovers.  Check ‘em out!

Chihuahua Meetup Group

Since I am a new proud momma of a 7 month-old Chihuahua, I want to make sure Shelby is well socialized with other dogs as well as humans.  I would be horrified if my sweet baby began to bark or growl at people and/or other dogs.  I’ve seen “The Dog Whisperer”;  I do not wish for my dog to become a maniacal terror.  Chihuahuas are notoriously protective of their masters, and can become aggressive towards children or other dogs when not properly socialized and trained.

I discovered a Chihuahua meetup group in my area that regularly holds events throughout the year at various venues; usually dog parks, or pet boutiques, and spas.  It is an opportunity to meet and chat with other Chihuahua owners about their pint-sized pups, and most importantly for our fur babies to meet and play with dogs their own size!  Shelby would love to play with most dogs, but “most” dogs would crush her tiny 3.2 pound frame (yes, the o.2 lbs counts in her case).

Last weekend, a spring meetup was held at Urban Pet, a great pet boutique and spa in Montreal-West  (they have really great products you cannot find elsewhere).  Ruth and Benoit were very gracious hosts.  Unfortunately, there was a mix-up with the location of the meetup, so only three Chihuahuas made it (including my Shelby).  Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable morning, and Shelby made a couple friends;  Chula and Lucy.  An English Bulldog even crashed the party!  After a few minutes, the dogs got acquainted with each other, and the playing began.  It was so hilarious to see Chula and Shelby chase one another.  Dogs at play are the cutest thing ever :)

Introducing Porschia’s puppies!

As you may know, Porschia, my unofficial spokes-doggy (see the Facebook page profile pic!), had three puppies about two months ago.  I had an absolute blast photographing these rambunctious pups. It was a little chaotic with the incredibly gusty winds, synchronized bowel movements, and damage control but it worked out thankfully.  The little girl pup who loves to be the center of attention has already been adopted!  She’s the lighter-coloured one with the incredible blue eyes.  The two boys will surely be adopted very soon.  Hope you enjoy the pics!
